The author of the Book of Wisdom is unknown; Chapter 10   Wisdom protected the first one formed by God, the father of the world, when he was created alone, and wisdom freed him from his sin and gave him power to govern all things.  But, when the unjust man went away from her in his anger, he perished by the rage in which he murdered his brother.  For whose cause, when water destroyed the earth, wisdom healed it again, saving the just man by a mere piece of wood.   Moreover, when the nations conspired together in doing wickedness, she recognized the just man and preserved him without blame before God, and kept him strong to face the compassion for his son.  She delivered the just man who fled from the wicked who were perishing when the fire came down upon Pentapolis, where evidence of their wickedness remains desolate and smokes to this day, where trees bear fruit that do not ripen, and a pillar of salt stands as a monument to an unbelieving soul.  For ignoring wisdom, not only did they fail to recognize good things, but they also left men a memorial of their folly, so that their shortcomings could never go unnoticed.  Yet wisdom rescued those who served her.  She guided the just man when he fled from his brother's wrath through the right paths and showed him the kingdom of God, and gave him the knowledge of the holy things, made him honorable and accomplished in his works.  In the deceit of those who overreached him, she stood by him and made him honorable.  She kept him safe from his enemies, and she defended him from seducers, and in his difficult fight she gave him victory that he might know that wisdom is mightier than all.    She did not forsake the just man when he was sold into captivity, but delivered him from sinners; she went down with him into the dungeon.  And she left him not alone in prison until she brought him the scepter of the kingdom and authority over those who oppressed him; and revealed his accusers as liars and gave him everlasting glory.   She delivered the just people and blameless race from the nations that oppressed them.  She entered into the soul of the servant of God and stood against dread Kings with wonders and signs.    And she rendered to the just the wages of their labors and conducted them in a wonderful way;  she was to them for a shelter by day and a starry beacon in the night.  She brought them through the Red Sea and led them through great waters.  But their enemies she drowned in the sea and from the depth of the sea she cast them forth.  Therefore the just took the spoils of the wicked.  And they sang to your holy name, O Lord, and with one accord they praised your victorious hand.  For wisdom opened the mouth of the dumb and made the tongues of infants eloquent.
